Nellie Goes To The Vet

Nellie has been limping, and I found a swollen area/mass on her left rear leg. I was terrified that the vet visit would indicate the likelihood of cancer.

Nellie at the vet

The vet, Dr. Miller, said Nellie had pitting edema, and he could not feel a mass. He prescribed Rimadyl, a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory given to dogs. Because it can be hard on older dogs, I had blood work done to make sure this would not likely be an issue. Her blood work was pretty good, except her hemoglobin was low, so he recommended iron.

Dr. Miller wasn’t sure of what caused the edema, but he couldn’t find any swollen lymph nodes, or any mass higher up. So, because it was localized, he thought she must have injured it or strained it. She was also generally weak in the rear.

Upon coming home, I gave her a dose of Rimadyl, and she already seems better, although the swelling is still present.

I will be taking her back in about 10 days to repeat the blood work and get her rechecked. I am so relieved that this condition is treatable!

Remember Kemy?

A few months ago, I taped Kemy’s ears for my friend Josh. Last weekend, Kemy won major points at the dog show in Doswell, beating me and See See! Check out those perfect ears!

Look at the previous posts to see “before” pics. https://shepherdsight.com/2023/01/17/gsd-puppy-ears-2/ and https://shepherdsight.com/2023/02/12/kemys-ears-are-up/

Best GSD show pics ever!

Well, of my dogs, anyway! Just got these pics, and I can’t believe how pretty they look in these professional photos done by David Sombach at the Virginia Kennel Club show on June 25, 2023. https://davidsombachphotos.shootproof.com/ https://thevirginiakennelclub.com/

Clydesdale Out of Sight (“Clyde”)
Tennessee Walker Out of Sight (“See See”)

Clyde and See See need one more major win to become Champions under AKC rules. There are two more shows this weekend with majors available, but I’m not counting any chickens!

Success!

The Virginia Kennel Club https://thevirginiakennelclub.com/ had their show this weekend in Doswell. Saturday, we did not win. Luc, the dog I (unsuccessfully) bred See See to, won and finished his Championship title! As you can see from previous posts, he is a very nice dog. https://shepherdsight.com/2023/05/29/see-see-was-bred-on-5-27-2023/ https://shepherdsight.com/puppies/

Sunday was, like, totally, the best day ever! Clyde got a 5 point major and Best of Opposite Sex by beating the special (a dog who was a champion, Luc)!!! Then, omg, See See beat Clyde for best of winners for the crossover and also got a 5 point major!!!! The judge, Patricia Hess, told me she really liked what I was breeding!

I will post the professional win pics when I get them. In the meantime, here are some random pics that were shot from ringside.

See See is not pregnant.

See See had an ultrasound today at Springfield Vet, and we saw Dr. Kara Kolster, a reproduction specialist. Unfortunately, no evidence of pregnancy was found. I didn’t realize how much I was looking forward to puppies. I’m very sad.

I took these selfies a few days ago when I thought See See might be pregnant.

Are there puppies in there?

Still waiting. See See is only about 2 weeks post breeding, so it’s too early to tell if she is pregnant or not. Therefore, I’m treating her like she is, just to make sure she gets the best of care. She’s on the futon taking a nap next to a blanket with her grandfather’s picture on it. She looks downright comfy!

Follow this blog if you are interested in potential puppies from this litter. See previous posts for more info.

See See was bred on 5/27/2023!!!

Tennessee Walker Out of Sight (See See)
See See and Luc
This is Luc at 16 months

See See was bred to this lovely male, Luc, who is co-owned by Vera Symonds of Fredericksburg and Lisa Richardson. Here is a link to his pedigree: https://www.pedigreedatabase.com/breeding.result?father=3130146&mother=3038844

Both dogs are DM clear. See See was OFA certified at age 2 with GOOD hips and CLEAR elbows. Luc is prelimmed with GOOD hips and CLEAR elbows because he is less than 2 years. Both are on their way to championships.

Watch my puppies page: https://shepherdsight.com/puppies/ and this blog for updates, and keep your fingers crossed that this was a successful breeding!

Johnny goes High in Trial in AKC Obedience!

Johnny has 2 legs toward his CD title in AKC obedience. Today, he was the highest scoring dog at the trial! GO JOHNNY GO! Thank you Twyla, ring steward extraordinaire, for videoing!

This is the sit-stay/get-your-leash exercise. Johnny makes this look easy, but you’d be surprised how many dogs jump up when their leash is picked up.
